Nicholas and Perry Flamel are ‘humani’ who have found a spell to make them immortal, but it needs to be renewed every month. The Codex, the book that contained the spell, and also many other dangerous items, was stolen by Machiavelli and his cronies. Machiavelli is a servant to the Elders, powerful immortals who want to rule the earth.

Now it is up to Sophie and Josh Newman, the twins in the prophecy written in the Codex. Sophie’s powers have been Awakened, but not Josh’s.
